Earrings have enjoyed a long history of being used as adornment, cultural identification and as a sign of wealth and status dating back to 2500 B.C. Legend has it that evil spirits were thought to be able to enter through any opening into the body and take control of the person. Earrings were worn to ward off these spirits. During the Roman Empire, wealthy women used earrings to show off their status.
